Winner and New Champion...

Hello everyone! What a beautiful day it is. Do you know why it's such a beautiful day? Because after a lot of nail biting and sweating, I am officially the new fantasy football league champion! Woot!

Not all of us can be winners, so below I've posted my favorite Tosh.0 video ever; "Crying Giants Fan Web Redemption". I especially love it when the Lions #1 fan comes on to tell him how it is. ;-)

Hope you're having a wonderful Wednesday! Back to Borderlands!

Hot Nerd of the Week!

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of posting yesterday, we were digging ourselves out of the Snowpocalypse.

This week's Hot Nerd of the Week is David Tennant! This Scotish hottie is best known as the 10th doctor on Dr. Who.

David Tennant has been acting since he was 16, and in addition to many television and film roles, he is also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

David has been an avid watcher of Dr. Who since he was a child, and when the opportunity to become the 10th doctor cam along, David jumped at the chance. The Dr. Who role is the defining role of his career, and he is the most liked doctor of the new series.

Tennant also played the part of Barty Crouch Jr. in the Harry Potter movies. It's a role that he is nearly unrecognizable in, further proving the range of his acting skills.

Kickin' it with Kinect

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a totally awesome Christmas! I definitely did. I got a super sweet Kitchen Aid mixer, a few trades (Oracle, Ex Machina, Fables, Walking Dead, etc.), a Wonder Woman Ami-Comi, Hello Kitty/Johnny Cupcakes swag, a Dalek (which I've been terrifying the dog with), and a LOT of socks and underwear (thanks mom!). Of all of the awesome things I got, by far the coolest thing ever is the Kinect.

If you have an Xbox, I highly suggest this piece of tech. It is unreal! Like the Wii, it allows you to make your own avatar, and uses your body motions to translate onto the screen. Unlike the Wii, instead of using a remote control, it uses motion capture to recognize your body, no controller needed! The Kinect bundle comes with "Kinect Adventures". It's a pretty awesome game. It's basically a bunch of small games packed into one. It has a hand-ball type game, a bubble popping game, you fix leaks in another, and there is even a white water rafting game! It's so flipping cool.

The Kinect also has a camera in it, so while you're looking like an idiot it takes pictures of you. Kind of like when you're on a roller coaster. The Kinect then upload the pictures to kinectshare.com, and if you sign in with your gamer tag, all the pictures are easily accessible.

I'm also a big fan of it because I live in the Northeast, and it's wintertime, so after playing the Kinect for a few hours, I don't feel like I need to trek my butt out into the frozen tundra to go to the gym.

Anyhoo, we ordered a few new games (Dance Central and Kinect Sports), so I'm sure that at very least Miss Cara M. and I will have a great review of those for you later this week!

Nerding 101: Holiday Gift Guide Pt. 4 - Stocking Stuffers

Still looking to get a few stocking stuffers for that non-geek? Here are a few suggestions to try to bring them to the dark side:

For the movie buff...

Kevin Smith's Green Hornet Vol. 1

This collects the first five issues of the "reboot" of the Green Hornet by Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Kevin Smith, the storyline is based on his script that the 2011 movie DIDN'T use. Includes a cover gallery, which is really nice given each issue of the floppies shipped with 5+ covers for EACH issue....

For the person who doesn't do "superheroes"...

Scalped TPBs (Vol. 1 - 6)

This one has no super powers and arguably no "heroes", but is fantastic! Set on a modern-day Indian reservation this is a gritty, realistic western-y drama. Far from the standard spandex & capes, nothing says Christmas like a trip to the casino...

For the comic fan who's been out of it for a while...

Wolverine Weapon X TPB Vol. 1 & 2
Great choice for Wolverine kicking ass! This one doesn't require you to have read 30 other books to understand the storyline. Written by Jason Aaron, (who also happens to write Scalped) its Wolverine doing what he does best! Yes, shish kebab is a perfectly acceptable Holiday meal...

For that new reader and future geek...

Tiny Titans TPBs
Perfect introduction to comics for kids, this is sure to get them hooked! (Even 20 something chicks love it!) No need to find the first volume, this is a title you can jump on board at any point.

Nerding 101: Holiday Gift Guide Pt. 3- Evan T.'s Holiday Picks!

http://www.ultrasabers.com/DominixV2_p/qs-aeon.htm A less expensive model of lightsaber found at Ultra Sabers, the Aeon gives you the ability to have you own lightsaber. Not Obi-Wans. Not Vaders. Yours. And it has a bunch of upgradable stuff if you want to spend even more moneys!

http://www.scifigenre.com/itemDetail.aspx?nItemID=3304 Nothing says baller, nothing says bling bling like some gold dice. When you are rolling damage with these bad boys, people know!

http://www.hasbro.com/nerf/en_US/shop/details.cfm?guid=5598FF2F-5056-900B-10A3-7C917202BF8A&product_id=27683&src=endeca The Nerf N-Strike Barricade RV-10 is the newest battery operated ten shot Nerf weapon. Let the poor and the stupid cock their guns, you have automatic fire!

http://www.thinkgeek.com/index.shtml A gift certificate to think geek is a fantastic geek gift. I mean, if you cannot find something to buy there, at any price point, then you are not a geek.

http://store.penny-arcade.com/products/papodc08002 Penny Arcade is the premiere web comic and to have five prints hand picked by one of the creators is awesome. Merch from these guys definitely lets people know of your true geek nature. Display them proudly!

http://www.dacardworld.com/gaming/neca-dc-heroclix-75th-anniversary-booster-pack The new DC themed Heroclix set has just been released. Some of the old school characters are being remade and it's a great set to start on for new players.

BONUS! http://www.avatarfleshlight.net/ Yea, they can't actually call it an Avatar fleshlight but it's the "blue alien" fleshlight. Nothing says Merry Christmas like blue alien vagina replicators.

Batman: Under the Red Hood

Happy Saturday everyone! Hope you're all having a great day! The Editor has the flu, so we've just been catching up on movies and video games and whatnot all day. We just finished "Batman: Under the Red Hood" and it's definitely another winner by DC.

Following in the animated awesomeness that is "Wonder Woman" and "Green Lantern: First Flight", this movie does not disappoint. Sure, it kinda makes you wish it was live action, but the Warner/DC animation studio do a great job. It follows the Batman comic story lines form "A Death in the Family" and "under the Hood".

The story takes place in Gotham 5 years after Robin (Jason Todd Robin) was killed by The Joker. There is a new villain in town, and he calls himself The Red Hood. Batman soon finds out that some things from his past aren't dead, and he has to figure out a way to save the day, and save his friend.

Featuring voice talents such as Jensen Ackles, Neil Patrick Harris and Joe DiMaggio, this movie is great for all of you Batman fans out there.

Things You Should be Friday...

Things You Should Be Listening to...

Live From SModcastle: Crimson Magical Mages-- This is amazing. Jason Mewes and other people in the Kevin Smith universe play quite a lot of "Dungeons and Dragons". When Kev found out about this, he decided that he, Jason Mewes, producer Scott Mosier and friend/director Malcolm Ingram should create their own game like D&D. So "Crimson Magical Mages" was born. This hilarious podcast follows their game. It's totally raunchy, and amazingly hilarious.
Things You Should be Watching...

If you're a girl...

United States of Tara-- This show is great. It's very heartwarming and funny. The show follows Tara, a woman suffering from multiple personalities, and her family. It follows each family member, and shows how each member is coping with Tara's "problem". The bigger story involves Tara's past, and her trying to figure out what happened to her that triggered her disease. The show is certainly a dramedy and it proves that with a little bit of understanding that love can conquer all.

If you're a boy...

Sons of Anarchy-- Alright, I'll give it to The Editor and Evan on this one. They have been trying for MONTHS to get me to watch this, and now that I have finally had the time to sit down and watch, it's AMAZING. The show follows a biker gang in California. It highlights all their right and wrongdoings, and shows that more than anything, these people are not a gang, but family who would do just about anything to protect one and other. It's a super gritty show, but definitely worth the watch.

Things You Should be Reading...

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo-- This is one of the most amazing series I have ever read. They're a little slow in the beginning, but the payoff is awesome. The books follow Lisbeth Salander as she hacks and investigates different crimes. The biggest catch? Lisbeth is not a cop, nor an investigator. She is the most badass chick you will ever read about. And if you're going to cheat and watch the movies, just make sure that you're watching the Swedish subtitled movie, instead of waiting for the American version. I have a sneaking suspicion that the American version is going to cut out some key plot points to make the film a little less disturbing...

Hot Nerd of the Week!

So, I know it's been a while since the last one of these, but I thought of the most perfect hot nerd, so I had to write about it. This week's hot nerd of the week is Patton Oswalt!

This hot nerd is probably the funniest comedian I've ever seen. His stand-up is amazing, and mostly geek oriented. For example, in one of his shows, he says if he could go back in time he would kill George Lucas around 1994, to prevent the prequels from being made. A lot of his humor is geek/nerd/sci-fi related, and is absolutely amazing.

Not only is Patton a stand-up comedian, he is also an actor, producer and writer. He has been on TV shows such as "Community", "The united States of Tara", "Caprica" and "King of Queens". His biggest movie role was that of "Ratatouille". He has also written for a number of comic book series.

A graduate of The College of William and Mary, Patton Oswalt is basically my favorite person on the planet. That is why he is this week's hot nerd of the week!

Nerding 101: Holiday Gift Guide Pt. 2

Uber Goober-- This documentary about RPG gamers will please any D&D fan. It follows several groups of live action roll players (LARPers) while interviewing different people and religious groups about their feelings on RPG's and LARPers. $20 or less
How to Survive a Lawn Gnome Attack by Chuck Sambuchino-- I read this phenomenal book last night. Move over vampires and werewolves! There is a much bigger threat at hand. The lawn gnome. This book will walk you through what to do if you feel you're under attack. $15 or less

All my Friends are Dead by Avery Monsen and Jory John-- Another fantastic book. If you’re a dinosaur, all of your friends are dead. If you’re a pirate, all of your friends have scurvy. If you’re a tree, all of your friends are end tables. Each page of this laugh-out-loud illustrated humor book showcases the downside of being everything from a clown to a cassette tape to a zombie. Cute and dark all at once, this hilarious children’s book for adults teaches valuable lessons about life while exploring each cartoon character’s unique grievance and wide-eyed predicament. Less than $15

Trailer Park Boys Seasons 1-2-- This is by far my favorite Canadian TV show. It's filmed documentary style, and follows two guys trying to get their lives together after an 18 month prison stint. Set in a Canadian trailer park, it features a great cast, and hilarious dialogue. It'll set you back about $20.

$h!t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern-- When Justin finds himself laid off, he has to move back in with his parents. Justin has used his Twitter account to keep a record of all of the funnv, ridiculous shit his dad says on a daily basis. This book is a collection of his dad's best quotes. It's the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for dad! Less than $15.

Gotham City Sirens

Good day everyone! Sorry for skipping out on the posting yesterday, I get super busy this time of year, like I'm sure you all do! The last two day have been all about Christmas music, wrapping presents and doing holiday things.

Today's post is about one of my favorite comics currently, "Gotham City Sirens". GCS is an awesome story about Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy living together.
Basically, the girls are trying to leave behind their life of crime, and start new lives. The dialogue is very witty, and easy to follow. Paul Dini is the author of this series, and if you know anything about me, you know that he is one of my all-time favorite writers, and he does not disappoint in this series.

Poison Ivy is the seductress, Harley Quinn is the (still) joker-loving-Barbie wanna be-batshit crazy blond we all know and love, and Catwoman is the glue that holds them together. Whether it's working out an issue with the pet hyena's (yeah, I said hyena's) or trying to figure out a missing persons case, this comic is perfect for any girl who wants a story about kick-ass villainesses, or any boy who likes naughty chicks in tight clothes. In other words, I recommend this to EVERYONE, as it is sure to become one of your new favorites.

P.S. I know I left the plot line very vague, but after the whole "Please stop ruining Walking Dead for me" thing, I don't want to accidentally give up any spoilers! ;-)

FRIDAY VIDEO BONUS!

This video came to me from my wonderful derby team mates, Ms. Ida Feltersnatch. It's a video from last night's Conan O'Brien show. You will LOL.

Robin Hood

Hello everyone! So, back in 2006 the BBC created a 3 season series of "Robin Hood". I just finished the series and it was AWESOME. I'm a total history/historical fiction nerd, so this was just what I needed. It had everything you would want in a show. Action! Adventure! Romance!

Like every show, there are some throw away episodes, but even the throw away episodes in this show are full of adventure. The overall storyline is fantastic, and full of twists and turns. Not only does the series show Robin Hood and his Merry Men stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, but it also shows day to day life in the 1200's and the history of how Robin Hood became Robin Hood.

Of course the show also features some of everyone's favorite characters; The Sheriff of Nottingham, Little John, Maid Marion, etc. You come to know and love nearly all of the main characters, and there are moments where you'll find yourself completely tensed up during a fight scene, or you'll find yourself crying at some particularly sad stuff (I don't want to give anything away, so I'm keeping it vague).

The story takes place in Nottingham, England in the 1200's. While Kind Richard (the Lionheart) is in the Holy Lands during the crusades, his brother, Prince John, is looking after England. John is basically terrorizing the lands and taking everything the his subjects have. The whole story is about Robin and crew protecting England from the Sheriff and Prince John.

I know I'm totally gaga about the BBC, but this show is only 3 seasons long, so if you're finding that you need something to fill your TV void over the winter while all other shows are on hiatus, I highly recommend this one.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Between Christmas shopping and attending a Christmas party tomorrow I'm going to be busy all day, so most likely I will not post. I'll miss you all dearly, but I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces on Sunday!

The Walking Dead Season Finale = Failure

*Sigh* Where do I begin? I had such high hopes for this show. I've been a fan of the comic for years, and when rumors started circulating about a TV adaptation, I was apprehensive about it. However, when I heard that AMC had picked it up, I felt like my fears had left. AMC does such a great job with things that it's very hard to fail over there. After the success of "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad", AMC has carved out a little niche for themselves as the cable channel who can do no wrong.

The first two episodes of the show didn't really "grab" me as much as I would have liked. It wasn't until the third episode that I really started caring about what happened. The show is suspenseful, and in my opinion, over the top gory, but smack dab in the middle of all that, you have an awesome story about humanity, and survival. Some people complain that the show "needs more zombies", and that is part of the problem. This story is NOT a story about zombies. It's a story about survival, human nature, and the depths people will go to when they have nothing.

My problem with the season finale is that I could not have cared less about what was going on. I understand that there were only six episodes allowed this season, however, those six episodes failed to make me care about any of the characters. The entire CDC storyline was a waste of time, and basically created a "reset" button for the last episode. We gained absolutely nothing by going to the CDC. When it got to the point where CDC guy was talking to the computer, and the computer was talking back, and the computer locked them into the building, things got a little too "Umbrella Corporation" for my taste. I mean, how convenient was it that when they show up to the CDC, it happens to be the SAME TIME the gigantic doomsday clock is running out? *YAWN*  The one thing we did learn though, is that in the event of a zombie apocalypse, booze is NEVER a good idea.

Then there was the medical explanation.I don't care about what it does to the brain, and I don't care how it works, I just care about how to kill it. Yes, it's super sad that CDC guy had to experiment on his wife, however, I knew so little about CDC guy, that I failed to care that he had to shoot his wife in the head. Dire times call for desperate measures.

At the end, there is this big "you're leaving, I'm staying" thing with Jacqui and Andrea. Let's start with Jacqui. Jacqui was such a minimal character this season, did anyone really CARE if she stayed? Honestly? Then there is Andrea. If the show follows the books at all, Andrea will becoming a key character in what happens. We're only six episodes in, and they have made Andrea out to be one of the least likable characters on the show. I was WAY more upset at the fact that she almost took Dale down with her, than I was that she wanted to kill herself.

I said it with "True Blood" and I'll say it again now. I understand that the producers and creators want the source material and the TV show to be different, so that fans of the source material don't get bored, and don't spoil things for people who haven't read it. That being said I have absolutely NO problem watching a television show that comes DIRECTLY from the source material. With "The Walking Dead" and "True Blood" the source material is SO good that there is really not a whole lot of reason why they SHOULD be changed. Sure, the occasional add-in of a character, or a slight story change here or there can be a good thing, but when you veer so far off the original story, it just makes me sad.

I'm the kind of gal who believes in second chances, so obviously I'll give season two a go. I'm not saying by any means that the show is terrible, I'm simply saying that it has failed to impress me so far. There are 6 million people who think otherwise, but I'm sticking to my guns. I think with the talent they have at their disposal, it's not too much to ask for a little more.
