Carly on Comics Reviews Some Video Games!

Hello hello! Hope y'all had a great weekend full of awesomeness and fireworks! Last week I promised some video games, and this week I'm delivering. We're going to take a peek at the three games I've been playing as of late, and I'll let you know what I think of each!

Lucha Fury- The first game we're going to look at is the side-scrolling awesomeness for Xbox Live Arcade called "Lucha Fury". This is by far one of the best button mashers I've played in a long time. The press release for the game describes the synopsis as the following:

"In the world of Lucha Fury, the lost, ancient recipe for Pollojo, the nectar of the gods, is discovered by a struggling bar owner, who turns it into a highly successful energy drink. The gods, however, are not so happy about humans stealing their drink, and they set out to reclaim what is theirs - destroying humanity in the process. Four masked luchadores, having never accomplished much of anything in the past, suddenly find themselves without Pollojo and are sparked into battle to take down the old gods and return with their precious energy drink, possibly saving the world along the way."

Basically, there are four different luchador wrestlers to choose from, each with their own skill set and you pick the one you like best. For me, the chick was the obvious choice. The graphics are very colorful and vibrant, and the animation reminds me very much of "Borderlands", which I love. The best part about this game is that you can play local multiplayer with up to four people. In my opinion there are not enough games like that, where if you'd like to have three of your closest friends to play a video game you can all be on the same console playing together. Damn kids today with their online friends... Seriously, get a real live friend or two.  The game will set you back $10, but it's totally worth it for all of the button-mashing fun you'll have with your friends!

Child of Eden- The jury is still out on this one for me. "Child of Eden" is the follow up game to "Rez", which I've never played, but people seem to love. "Child of Eden" can be used with or without a Kinect, but I feel like the experience is better with a Kinect. The synopsis is as follows:

"Child of Eden thrusts you in the center of a battle to save Project Lumi, a mission to reproduce a human personality inside Eden, the archive of all human memories. As the project nears completion, the archive is invaded by an unknown virus. The player's mission is to purify Eden from the virus to restore hope and peace."
Instead of killing things, you "purify" them, and as you do so, you start to realize (when you're using the Kinect) that it feels like you're conducting the world. Each time you "purify" an enemy, there is a different sound fed back to you, so you're essentially making music. I found the game to be a little bit difficult to get used to, and I wish that it had more save spots, so that if I failed 3/4 of the way through a level  I didn't have to go all the way back to the beginning, but other than that, it's certainly an experience unlike any other. I described the game feel as "zen". If you're a big fan of the Kinect, it's certainly a must have.

Heavy Rain- The last game up for review today is "Heavy Rain" for the PS3. I know this one has been out for a while, but I just recently borrowed Evan T's PS3, so give me a break. I love this game. After the first half hour of playing I thought I was going to hate it, then I got submerged deeper into what was going on with the story, and it's pretty f'n amazing. I don't know how to refer to it other than a "choose your own adventure" type story. There are four different characters you're playing as, each at different times, and the story is told based on the decisions you make. It's like playing a movie, if that makes sense. Wikipedia's synopsis of the game is:

"Heavy Rain's story is a dramatic thriller modeled after film noir, featuring four protagonists involved with the mystery of the Origami Killer, a serial killer who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims. Ethan Mars is a father who is trying to save his son from being the next victim, while investigative journalist Madison Paige, FBI profiler Norman Jayden, and private detective Scott Shelby are each trying to track down clues to the Origami Killer's identity."

It's a hauntingly awesome story, and you'll be amazed at how attached you'll get to the characters. If "L.A. Noir" is anything like "Hard Rain", I need to go out and buy a copy STAT.

The Curious Case of the Pink XBox Controller...

So, The Editor and I were talking yesterday, and apparently, Microsoft is discounting their wireless controllers. The Editor managed to find them online through Walmart for $30 a piece, which is a total steal. Since our controllers are about 3.5 years old, and have probably 8,000 hours on them, we decided to order up some new ones. One problem: they only offer the controller in black.

While searching online I managed to find black, white and some sort of chrome color. I'm very particular about my controller, since it's become an extension of myself, and I absolutely TREASURE my pink controller. It seems that Microsoft no longer makes the pink or blue controller, and that makes me very sad.

My preeeeeecious....
Once again, I'm feeling like it's a boys world. You can go to Best Buy or Toys R Us or Walmart on any given day and see black, white, dragon painted, and Halo controllers, but what about something for the ladies? Not to make it sound like us girls COULDN'T use the black, white or Halo ones, it's just nice, as a gamer girl, to be be able to have something made specifically for us. Sure, I know I'm a sucker for marketing, but I'm a girl, and I like pink! I also like the fact that when we have people over, the boys aren't putting their grubby fingers all over MY controller.

Speaking of marketing, The Editor thinks that the reason they no longer make pink controllers is because they didn't sell well. I'd like to call bullshit on that one. Sure, they may not have sold well, but it's not because they weren't in demand, it's because most of us didn't know it existed. The pink controller was something that was special ordered through Amazon, and I can honestly say, I've NEVER seen one in a store. Every girl who has seen my controller is envious, and expresses that they would have bought one, had they known about it. Sony is doing the same thing. They offer a cotton candy pink controller for the Playstation, and to this day, the only place Cara M. and I have been able to find it is at Past Time Legends, a used video game store in Albany.
Even prettier pink than it's Microsoft counterpart...

The Editor and I did come to a solution with my pink controller problem however. We're going to pry off the pink case, and switch the guts out with the new controller. It would be nice if I could get an updated pink controller, and not have to pry the guts out of my old one, but until marketing departments realize that girls like to play video games too, I'll just have to deal. Problem solved.

Video Games!

I was thinking about today's "What You Should be... Friday", and since I've been sick all week, I haven't really done a whole lot of research. Instead, I've decided to give you a couple of video game recommendations, since I've been playing a lot of those lately. Enjoy!

NBA Jam- We bought the updated version of the 1993 game about a month ago, and it's sooooo much fun to play. We're not huge sports fans, and we're certainly not NBA fans at all, but this game is a blast to play. It doesn't take a whole lot of time to get through a season, and like the original, you can play with any team you want. After you play "X" amount of of games, you start unlocking "Legends" like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. There are also a variety of other games you can play within the game such as dunking competitions and "HORSE". It's a pretty fun game and the nostalgia factor is through the roof.

You Don't Know Jack- After Microsoft decided to discontinue "1 vs. 100" from Xbox live, we needed a new trivia game to play. It's super fun to play, however, unlike 1 vs 100, instead of playing against a bunch of people in the online world, you're playing against a few of your friends. The reason I prefer the 1 vs 100  model is because it gives the whole room an opportunity to shout out an answer. However, from what I understand, you can play "Jack" online, and get the same type of deal. You Don't Know Jack, is superfun if you are like me and enjoy fast paced trivia.

Dance Central- Let me just tell you... I friggen' LOVE my Kinect. Dance Central is one of the most fun games out there. You can play it alone, or with a group, and the results are always hilarious. I like this game because it's a good workout, the music is great, and they have a "training" program to help you learn the moves, so you aren't doing it completely on the fly if you don't want to. They also have dance battles, if you're someone who thinks they can do well with that. Basically, you select a song, an avatar appears on screen, and you do what the avatar tells you to. It's kind of like Rock Band or Guitar Hero in that, it will let you know when you make a wrong move. In every song there is a 10 second or so pause where you just get to make up dance moves, and it replays the ridiculousness when you're done preforming. So. Much. Fun!

Lego Happy Potter is AWESOME.

I should revise the title and state that ALL Lego video games are awesome. I started with Lego Batman, and moved onto Lego Harry Potter as soon as that came out. I renewed my love for it over the weekend whilst recovering from the flu.

It's seemingly a very simple game. You play through, do puzzles, defeat bad guys, blah blah blah... But then, after you've completed the game, you go back through and unlock a TON of extra characters and spells and whatnot. It's a great game because "Free Play Mode" is completely different from "Story Mode", and you won't even qualify to unlock all of the achievements until you've played though on Free Play.

My only complaint about the Lego games is that Free Play mode can be kind of complicated. You definitely need a walk through up on your computer while you're "treasure hunting", or there's really no way you'll find everything you need to find.

Either way, the Lego games are fun for everyone. Your kid sister or your grandfather are both bound to enjoy it. In addition to Lego Batman and Lego Harry Potter there is also Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Rock Band.

Odds and Ends With Evan T.!

Things I wanted to write about...
By Evan T.

S.D.C.C. Exclusive Cobra Commander w/ Starscream Jet

So when I was a kid...wait, I still am a kid. O.k., So when I was YOUNGER if you had said to me, "Hey you! Do you want a new G.I. Joe toy which is also a new Transformers toy?" I would have replied "Hell yeah!" at which point I would have gotten into any number of windowless vans just to get a peek. That wish is now coming true this year with this S.D.C.C. exclusive. Cobra Commander, in a proper flight suit and caring Megatron as a gun (!!!!), comes packaged with an airplane in the paint scheme of Starscream. I'm sure Chris Latta (the voice of both the Commander and Starscream) is loving it wherever he is. It is the culmination of two great love, this toy. Now I'm either going to have to make a trek out to San Diego (German for a Whale's Vagina), know someone who is going or allow the scalpers have there way with me. It is a perfect combination of worlds colliding. Almost like if The Rock and Vin Diesel got together and made a flick....oh wait....

Top Gear

O.k., so I know that Carly JUST wrote about it but I cannot bump the Top Gear enough. While America has recently started their own version I am going to speak about the U.K. edition. If you have never, ever seen an episode you are living in the freakin stone age as far as I am concerned. Even if you don't like cars you will be entertained more than Charlie Sheen at the A.V.N. Awards. Just looking at the most recent season the presenters at Top Gear have bought cheap convertibles and driven through the Middle East, come to America with some European super cars and gone through Virginia, raced a Porsche against a Volkswagon beetle dropped from a helicopter, landed a helicopter on a car, faced off against their Australian counterparts, offended the entire country of Mexico and figured out which car you should buy if you are a European gangster. That's five episodes, so far. Get on Netflix and catch up with seasons 9 - 12 or maybe you know people, People who know people who rob the internets of television shows. Ask them for some seasons. You will be glad you did.

Captain America and The Avengers

O.k. So if you read the blog, which I assume you do because you are reading it right now, you know that Captain America is coming to theaters this year. There is going to be a video game tie in. It might be good but more than likely it will not be any good for anything but a coaster. That's why I went back in time and picked up, on ebay, a copy of this game. It started life as a coin op four player arcade game which was translated to Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Game Boy and Game Gear. You got to choose to control Iron Man, Hawkeye, Vision and the good Captain himself as you battled through classic villains like Mandarin, Whirlwind, Red Skull, Ultron and Crossbones (among others) in side scrolling glory reminiscent to the X-Men arcade game. The game also has some great, and by great I mean horribly great, voice acting. A lot like Resident Evil. If this game sounds like something you would like to check out I suggest you pick up a copy now before the movie comes out and the prices spike.

Avengers Assemble!

So while I was checking out the things that are not booty shaking videos on Youtube I came across this hilarious little web show (Youtube Channel: avengersweb). It's episode run from three to four minutes and involve various members of the Avengers team. Each member is a spoof version of themselves. Iron Man is always drinking, Hawkeye is a horn dog, Captain America uses racial terms your grandfather would use and Ms. Marvel is constantly ignored or belittled. The episodes are quick and fun and the run the range from the B.P. oil spill to health care to carpooling. Like these good people on Facebook and check out their stuff. Hopefully we can get some more of these episodes.

Video Game Vixen!

Good day everyone! I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, so there is only on thing that means... Video games until my eyeballs fall out! I'm not quite sure what it is, but any time I don't feel well, I pop a game into the 360, grab a glass of Sprite, cuddle up under a blanket and shoot things all day long. I think it might just be the cure to the common cold. The post today is going to be me talking about some of my most favorite games ever. What you need to know about me is that I rarely get a new game. Generally speaking, I find a few games that I really REALLY like, and just allow myself to be consumed by them forever. The following is a list of some of my favorites, in no particular order.

Borderlands- This game is the most addicting game I have ever played in my life. When The Editor and I first got it last winter, we played this game from 6 PM til 3 AM on the weekends, and pretty late into the evening on work days. This game is a FPS, which allows you to gain levels as you gain experience. With the gains in levels, you also get better weapons, and fight harder enemies. you get to pick one of four characters, and each character comes with it's own special abilities that you get to "beef up" as you level up. The game takes place on Pandora, an alien planet, and you're basically just doing favors for different people to try and get to the "final boss". The first time you play through, you'll be like "Wow, that boss sucked. I mean, seriously?!", but then when you access all of the downloadable content, you realize that you have like, 7,000 more hours of game play left! Certainly the most bang for your buck.

Civilization Revolution- This game is a turn-based strategy game which requires you to start as one of 10 different civilizations, and try to make your civilizations beat the others in one of four categories. This game is addicting in the way Sim City was to me when I was a kid. It's really really fun to build an empire, and be attacking enemies, and have enemies attacking you. It's also a great learning tool for kids, because as you play, you unlock "great people", "World Wonders" and you learn about different cultures. It's fun because you're learning, and you don't know it. :-)

Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2- These two are probably my favorite games on the planet. These games are all about trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. There are "regular" zombies, and there are "special" zombies. The regular zombies just munch on you a little, while the specials just try and kill you right away. Each campaign has between 3 and 5 levels in it, so you can generally get a whole game in within an hour or so (comes in handy if you're trying to blow off some steam before a wedding or something). This is by FAR the best game to play if you've had a stressful day at work. You can just name each zombie after a co-worker or boss who upset you off, and just shoot away!

Dead Space- Yes, yes, I'm aware that there is a new Dead Space, however, I JUST got it in the mail yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to play yet. I just started Dead Space about a month ago, and I friggen love it. You're part of a mechanic crew sent into space to check out a space station that has had radio silence for about a week. When you get there, the ship is a mess, and no one is to be found. As you explore the ship, all sorts of nasty alien-monsters jump out at you, and make you scream. When I play this game, at times, I am literally white knuckled grabbing the controller because the game is so suspenseful. Just. Flipping. Awesome.

NBA Jam- This updated version of the classic game is the best co-op game to play. It's 2 on 2 basketball, old school style. As you advance in your division, you gain achievement points and get to unlock classic players like Larry Bird and John Stockton. Super fun game, and one game can be played in less than an hour which makes it another great game to play if you're short on time.

Kinect Adventures- This one gets the award for "Best Substitute for the Gym". The Kinect does motion capture on you, and translates your movements to your avatar. There are a whole bunch of challenges that you have to try and beat. Some of the challenges are things like, whitewater rafting, obstacle courses and kick ball. I live in the Northeast, and when it's below 20 out, I don't really feel like dragging my freezing buns to the gym, and this is a GREAT substitution for the gym. My abs, arms and legs feel AWESOME, and the best part is, it's FUN, so you don't even really care that you're working out. Also, the Kinect takes pictures of you at random while you're completing your quests, the aftermath of which is AMAZING.

\
I know there are a whole lot of games that I've left out (Red Dead, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty), and I'm hoping to get to all of those someday when I play them, lol. In the meantime, I'm going to take the next few Thursdays and commission Evan T. and The Editor to share some of their favorites. Til tomorrow, happy gaming!

My Obsession with Civ Rev.

 Sid Meyer's Civilization Revolution is probably my favorite video game ever. Why? Well, I honestly have no idea. The game (which came out in 2008) is massively addicting to me. Basically, you start the game as a civilization (English, Mongolian, French, Egyptian, etc.) and you build your civilization from the ground up. Each civilization has different strengths and weaknesses, and the object of the game is to beat the other civilizations in one of four ways to win the game. The four victories being;

Domination Victory-
This one is my favorite. The editor would be more than happy to tell you that one. When I'm in full on domination mode, you'll hear me screaming some pretty colorful things from the living room. In a domination victory the player must capture all of the other civilizations' capital cities. Sounds a lot easier than it is.

Cultural Victory- In a cultural victory the player must obtain a total of 20 great persons (Marie Curie, Mark Twain, etc.), wonders, and/or converted cities in any combination, and build the United Nations wonder.

Economic Victory- In this victory, the player must obtain 20,000 gold, and build the world bank.

Technological Victory- The player must research all technologies necessary to build and launch a space ship, and be the first to reach Alpha Centauri. This is my second favorite because I get to build a space ship.

Sweet-assed Space ship.
The Game can be played as a multi-player game, however, I like to play solo against the computer. There is such a big delay when you're on Xbox live, that sometimes it takes FOREVER to be your turn, and quite frankly, I don't have any patience. Lack of patience is the reason The Editor shot me down when I said I was going to open a WoW account.

Simply put, this game is super fun, and you'll waste hours of your life playing it. If you're a fan of real-time strategy games or something similar to Sim City, I guarantee you'll like it. Sorry to review a two year old game, but I CANNOT stop playing it. I'll trade it in for Black Ops in a couple weeks, but until then, happy reading!

P.S. Holy shit. I just found out that they have Civ Rev as an iPhone app. Move over Oregon Trail! You've just gotten bumped out of the way as my favorite cell phone game!!

Kickin' it with Kinect

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a totally awesome Christmas! I definitely did. I got a super sweet Kitchen Aid mixer, a few trades (Oracle, Ex Machina, Fables, Walking Dead, etc.), a Wonder Woman Ami-Comi, Hello Kitty/Johnny Cupcakes swag, a Dalek (which I've been terrifying the dog with), and a LOT of socks and underwear (thanks mom!). Of all of the awesome things I got, by far the coolest thing ever is the Kinect.

If you have an Xbox, I highly suggest this piece of tech. It is unreal! Like the Wii, it allows you to make your own avatar, and uses your body motions to translate onto the screen. Unlike the Wii, instead of using a remote control, it uses motion capture to recognize your body, no controller needed! The Kinect bundle comes with "Kinect Adventures". It's a pretty awesome game. It's basically a bunch of small games packed into one. It has a hand-ball type game, a bubble popping game, you fix leaks in another, and there is even a white water rafting game! It's so flipping cool.

The Kinect also has a camera in it, so while you're looking like an idiot it takes pictures of you. Kind of like when you're on a roller coaster. The Kinect then upload the pictures to kinectshare.com, and if you sign in with your gamer tag, all the pictures are easily accessible.

I'm also a big fan of it because I live in the Northeast, and it's wintertime, so after playing the Kinect for a few hours, I don't feel like I need to trek my butt out into the frozen tundra to go to the gym.

Anyhoo, we ordered a few new games (Dance Central and Kinect Sports), so I'm sure that at very least Miss Cara M. and I will have a great review of those for you later this week!

Red Dead Intervention

Hello all, the editor here making his first appearance. Before I settle in for an evening chock full of shooting bandits with a sleeping damsel on the couch next to me I thought I'd drop some quick knowledge on my current 360 obsession, Red Dead Redemption.

For those of you unaware, the game is basically Grand Theft Auto with horses.  Set in the wild west you play the role of a bandit-turned-bounty hunter John Marston, the cowboy version of Sabu. Much like Grand Theft Auto, the game is sandbox-style. You can complete main story missions, side quests for nutty strangers, or waste 3 hours hunting cougars and playing Liar's Dice. While I am really enjoying the game a lot, I am surprised it has a rating of 95 on Metacritic (a very neat website that compiles reviews of TV/Movies/Vidja Games etc. from many sources). Admittedly I'm only ~40% through the game so far, but I was expecting a more engrossing storyline. Hopefully as I make my way to Mexico the story will pickup, sort of the opposite of season two of Eastbound & Down...

Bottom line, if you enjoyed GTA, you'll happily burn many hours playing Red Dead Redemption!

John Marston, the most homicidal, genocidal, suicidal, death-defying cowboy

The one and only Sabu, hailing from Bombay Michigan!
